Amberfield is a fully established, well run and financially secure sectional title complex of 400 units set in 30  hectares of mature, well kept lawns and gardens.  The estate is surrounded by electric fencing and regular patrols of the perimeter and residential areas are conducted day and night 7 days a week.

The estate is situated on a hill overlooking the Natal Midlands town of Howick.  The first residents moved in during 1990 and it is presently home to about 650 people.

We have a large community centre which incorporates –

  • Administration offices
  • A 46 bed frail care unit of the highest standard and which has its own lounge and diningroom
  • A large lounge for residents
  • A 100 seat diningroom
  • A second large lounge for special functions and weekly church services
  • A library
  • A hairdressing salon
  • A meeting room
  • A small snooker room

Lunches are served daily in the dining room at very reasonable cost.  Take aways are also available and for a small fee meals can be delivered to your unit.  Friends and families are  always welcome.

The Administration and maintenance of Amberfield is in the hands of a full time General Manager supported by a staff of 9 people including an Estate Manager.

The Frail Care Unit is headed by a Matron who is supported by a staff of qualified Sisters, all of whom  are highly experienced in Geriatric Nursing.

In addition to our own directly employed staff we have appointed carefully selected contractors to provide us with services such as –

  • Garden maintenance
  • Security
  • Preparation and serving of meals
  • Frail care ward attendants
  • Cleaning of windows and the community centre

Accounting and Administrative policies are set by a Board of Trustees elected annually by the Body Corporate.  The Body Corporate approves the annual budget and the amount of the monthly levy.  Our present levy compares very favorably in comparison to similar retirement villages.

As we are a Sectional Title complex, municipal rates are not included in the levy but, together with the electricity costs, are paid by residents direct to the Howick Municipality.

We have a central telephone switchboard and a telephone will be installed in your cottage on the day you move in.  All internal calls are free and the system incorporates an emergency link to Frail Care.

We also offer an optional ten channel DSTV cable television facility.  Residents must however have their own TV licence.

The monthly charge to residents would therefore normally include –

  • The levy based on the size of the unit
  • Telephone rental and costs of calls made
  • DSTV rental  (if option exercised)
  • Cost of water used

Residents are free to install their own TV dish if they so desire.
